Activism Ideas

Activism ideas are indexed at http://www.walklightly.org/animal_activist.htm.  Here are some more.

  1. Post this flyer everywhere you can around town and on a college campus to promote veganism.
  2. Join the Kalamazoo Animal Liberation League and come to the weekly meetingsIf not you, who? If not now, when? www.kallnet.org
  3. Make copies of our "Go Veggie" CD-ROM, and give them to your friends.  They have videos of inside the slaughterhouse as well as a wealth of information (documents in Word and PDF formats) on going vegetarian/vegan.  If you live on campus, contact SPA at w0mcmull@wmich.edu and we'll send you one in the campus mail for free.  Or, to make one (or a bunch) yourself, see the instructions at the bottom of this page.
  4. Become an effective activist.  Read this article, A Meaningful Life (PDF file), http://www.whyvegan.org/meaningfullife.html (HTML file).  Then, read this article, http://www.goveg.com/active/effective-intro.html.
  5. Register your credit cards and grocery store cards with Escrip for free at http://www.escrip.com.  When you register, choose "Vegan Outreach" (Group ID 150301508) as the organization you support.  Then, every time you make a purchase at a participating retail store, a % of the sale is donated to help spread the word about vegetarianism.  You don't have to do anything...just register your cards and forget about it!
  6. Literature Stands
One of the best ways we have found to encourage others to adopt a vegetarian diet is to simply hand them a leaflet explaining factory farming.  Then what could be better than if people could have access to a full 25-page Vegetarian Starter Kit (VSK) day or night?  That's why Students Protecting Animals at is installing VSK stands on campus and hopefully in the Kalamazoo area too.

Animal protection organizations have been working on getting stands placed across the country.  The pictures below and on the right are stands the group, Protecting Animals, have placed in Chicago.

If you are looking for an easy way to help animals, we need people to get permission from more locations to place the stands.  We also need help with keeping them filled with the literature.
  7. Help promote our vegetarian website, www.walklightly.org/vegan

Make a "Go Veggie" CD-ROM

Purpose:  It's an easy way to spread the vegetarian message.  Burn the files below onto a blank CD-R.  Then, give the CD to someone to view on his/her computer.  The CD contains videos on the meat industry, documents on why and how to switch to a vegetarian diet, etc.

  1. Buy CD-Rs when they are on sale.  They are often on sale for free or 100 for $5 after rebate at Office Max and other computer stores.
  2. Buy some jewel cases or sleeves for the CDs.  Thin jewel cases are on sale for free with rebate every so often.
  3. Burn the files below to a CD-R.  Make as many copies as you can hand out.
  4. Hand them out to pass along the message.  College campuses are a great spot.
  5. The viewers can see the files by going into "My Computer."  Right click on the CD drive icon.  Choose "explore" from the list in the drop-down menu.  All of the files on the CD will be displayed.

Here are the files I usually use:
