Greetings and salutations fellow Michigan Delta alums. Isn’t this website great? We finally have a way to keep alumni up to date on the current state of our chapter and make everyone aware of upcoming events. After struggling financially for a number of years and facing declining membership as well, it now seems clear that Mich. Delta has turned the corner and is on the road to a bright future. The Phi Alpha spirit has returned and taken hold of the hearts and minds of its members. The brothers are once again filled with a sense of optimism that hasn’t been around for some time. The house is in the overall best condition that it’s been in for a number of years thanks to the efforts of the brothers, the House Corp and alumni donations. However we alumni need to continue our support to help ensure that Mich. Delta stays on the right path and continues to flourish in order to attract the best and the brightest that Western has to offer. Due to the fact that the our house has endured over 30 years of the “excesses of youth” we are once again faced with asking for additional contributions to help us keep up with the never ending costs associated with maintaining and improving the fraternity house. There are a number of projects that are underway at the house that will help to ensure our chapters near term and long term objectives. The following is a list of some of the projects that we are currently undertaking that need further funding in order to complete:
- We are looking to reestablish commissary services to begin on a part time basis this spring and summer and be fully operational for the fall semester. Appliance upgrades, i.e., freezer chest, dishwasher, also tables, chairs, pots, pans plates and silverware are also needed.
- Due to ever-rising energy costs we are looking to upgrade the insulation in certain areas of the house which are currently under insulated and leading to a perpetual ice damming situation which in turn destroys the gutters.
- In an effort to create a more positive cash flow we are trying to make modifications to the house to enable as many as 18 actives to live there. These modifications are primarily in the way of bathroom upgrades. This effort is best illustrated by turning the attic into what has become known as the “Presidential Suite”. Over the past several years the attic has been insulated, dry walled, new electrical circuits added, a new window and a new door wall have installed at each end of the room and smoke detectors have been hard wired into the house’s existing fire alarm system. We are now at the point where we need funds to install a bathroom. Once the bathroom has been completed we expect to have as many as three brothers living there. However we’ll still need additional funding to satisfy city code requirements but we’ll be able to rent it out in the meantime.
- New lions for the front of the house, the top half of Rex has fallen of and he now resembles an IED victim.
- Washer and dryer as well as utility tub for “laundry room”.
- New used pool table for poolroom. Current pool table has a particleboard-playing surface and is badly warped.
- The brothers could also use some furniture in the way of couches, chairs, tables, lamps and sconces.
- Leadership school funding.
As you can see there is no way the chapter will never be in a financial position to generate the funds necessary to fulfill these initiatives. Therefore it’s up to us alumni to come to our chapters aid at this crucial time in our history. In addition to financial contributions if you are able to donate any of the above mentioned items that would be very helpful as well. We currently have an extremely motivated group of brothers who really need our support.
What do you say? Do it for Uncle Bobby…
There’s another very important issue that I’d like to discuss and that’s the creation of a Mich. Delta Alumni Association. To my knowledge we’ve never had one and when you stop and think about all the great people that that our part of Mich. Delta it’s a shame we’ve never had a formal alumni organization. Let’s do something about it! For starters we need to get as many alums to register on the Mich. Delta website as possible. Go to the Alumni section and enter your contact info and especially your email address. Maybe we can begin formalizing an association at this summer’s golf outing. Take care and look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s golf outing and at the Pig Roast/Homecoming weekend this fall….
