Minutes from Running Club Meeting
Jan 15, 2008 7:30 pm

I. Coach Dales

a. Guidelines for running club – possible rules (such as must attend x number of practices or participate in a time trial) to be able to run at a meet as part of the club

b. Physicals – to cover ourselves if someone gets hurt and to have history of health of members of the club.

c. We still have 17 T-shirts left to sell

d. We can get facilities and meets to run in but need the participation to increase so that we are not taking just two people to a meet

e. Will be able to run in April and May at WMU home track meet

II. Recruiting new members

a. How to Promote the club
i. Hand out flyers in the Bernhard Center – we will have to get permission for this
ii. Putting up flyers around campus and dorms
1. It is hard to get permission/space to put flyers up at the rec but we can try.
iii. T-shirt day – everyone from the club wears the T-shirt on camp

III. Budget

a. Fundraising
i. Selling T-shirts
ii. Working with other student organization to plan an event or social or athletic to raise money
iii. Starting a training program for beginners to get ready for a 5k and charge a fee for our services – this would take some planning and a lot of help from club members

IV. Race – Tentative date – Sat, April 12 2008, 5k run/walk

a. Would be something low key to raise money and get the word about the club out to the students and community.

b. Market it as a race to get people back in/kick off racing season and get ready for Borgess 5k (April 26)

c. Look into holding it at either celery flats or asylum lake

d. Goal is to get a lot of students participating in it

e. The club members will have to help out a lot with behind the scene stuff and getting everything together – sponsors, flyers, entry forms, giving okays from everyone involved, etc.

f. To have this happen we will need to have location and date and registration forms out and ready by beginning of Feb.

g. WE NEED CLUB MEMBERS TO BE INOVLVED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN

h. Ask Dr. Weideman if she would help promote the race by offering extra credit to her students that run in the race and bring there number to class

V. Indoor Meets

a. GVSU – Fri Jan 18, Jan 25, Feb 15, and Feb 22 they have an open meet that starts at 4pm where you can run in any event from 55 dash to 5k run, also includes all field events
i. Not sure exactly what it is like but sounds like a great opportunity to get out a race an a couple indoor meets.
ii. Would race against GVSU (possibly red shirts) and another school and unattached runners
iii. Need to let the athletic director know by the wed prior to the Friday meet if we are attending and who is running what
iv. Plan is to be ready to race and go to meets on Feb 15 and 22

b. Need to look into possible indoor meet opportunities with Tri-State and at Hillsdale

VI. Board Positions

a. Co-Chairs are needed to take over for Megan and Chad
i. We need to appoint or elect this position soon so that Megan and Chad can teach the new co-chairs about everything
ii. Set a deadline to decide?
iii. Nominations

b. SCC representative – Sports Club council meets every other Tues at 9pm at the Rec. Next meeting is Tues Jan 22
i. We need a member to start attending these so that we become part of SCC again and can get funding from them

VII. Tuesdays from 8pm-10pm the Field house is open to WMU students to run on the indoor track

a. Would anyone be interested in running there Tuesday nights?

b. If the weather is bad would we want to change the Tuesday run from 4-6 to 8-10 to be able to run at the field house

c. We are not allowed to do like repeats (like 200s where we fly around other runners and disturb them) but we could do some sort of workout or just get in some miles

VIII. Spirit of the Marathon

a. Spirit of the Marathon is the first ever non-fiction feature film to capture the drama and essence of the famed 26.2 mile running event. Filmed on four continents, the movie brings together a diverse cast of amateur athletes and marathon luminaries. As six unique stories unfold, each runner prepares for and ultimately faces the challenge of the Chicago Marathon. More than a sports movie, Spirit of the Marathon is an inspirational journey of perseverance and personal triumph; a spectacle that will be embraced by runners and non-runners alike.

b. Showing at Kalamazoo 10 at 7:30 Thursday Jan 24
i. Tickets are $10
ii. Let us know by FRIDAY JAN 18 if you are interested so that we can pre-order enough tickets for everyone
