Constitution

Music Teachers National Association-WMU Student Chapter

Preamble
We are a student group designed to enhance the professional development and growth of student music teachers.

Article I
Name

Music Teachers National Association at Western Michigan University.

Article II
Membership

Section A. Types of Membership
Because we are a student chapter of a larger organization, our membership consists of active student members who attend all meetings, fulfill financial obligations, and participate in chapter activities.

Section B. Membership Qualifications
Members are required to have an interest in teaching music, attend most chapter meetings and functions, and fulfill their financial obligations.
No individual will be denied membership because of race, sex, religion, color, height, weight, age, handicap, national origin, sexual orientation, or veteran status.

Section C. Selection of Members
Members are not selected, but are encouraged to join voluntarily on the basis of personal interests.

Section D. Voting Priviledges
All active members are allowed to vote on any issues pertaining to the chapter. Absentee ballots may be used if necessary.

Section E. Termination of Membership
Members will only be terminated if they do not fulfill the membership qualifications stated above and will then be asked to leave by the executive board.


Article III.
Officers

Section A. Elected Officers
1. President
a. Preside over all meetings.
b. Make final decisions regarding activities, speakers, and events.
c. Work with the student chapter advisor to better the chapter.
2. Vice President
a. Serve as the program chair.
b. Preside over meetings should the president be unable to attend.
c. Assist the President in all decisions regarding activities, speakers, and events.
d. Be responsible for contacting members and state student chapter chair.
3. Secretary
a. Record the minutes at the monthly meetings.
b. Type the minutes of each meeting and present them at the following meeting.
c. Send minutes to members via email, MTNA account.
d. Take attendance at each meeting.
e. Keep the chapter information organized and up to date.
f. Pick up mail at Faunce every other week.
4. Treasurer
a. Collect chapter dues.
b. Manage chapter finances.
5. Public Relations Coordinator
a. Maintain the MTNA Student Chapter Bulletin Board.
b. Publish fliers for monthly meetings and events.
c. Call potential members and invite them to meetings.
6. Webmaster
a. Oversees and maintains MTNA accounts and websites.
b. In charge of dealing with WMU technology issues.

Section B. Qualifications for holding office
Officers must be currently enrolled WMU Students and be committed to an active role in the organization.

Section C. Selection of Officers
Elections occur in April of the academic year. The President of the previous year will oversee elections. Nominations are taken from the floor for each position. Election is done by ballot. The winner will be the candidate with the most votes. Officers will serve for one school year and will begin their term in the fall of the new academic year.

Section D. Filling Vacancies
Majority vote will determine new officers if needed.

Section E. Recall of Officers
Conditions for removal from office will include failure to perform duties, or excessive absenteeism. This will be done by majority vote.


Article IV
Finances

Section A. On-campus accounts
MTNA will follow and be subject to all University policies, procedures, and practices regarding its accounts and finances.

Section B. Dues
Dues are determined by the national and state MTNA organizations respectively. Student chapter dues will be determined by the chapter and majority vote.

Section C. Financial Policy
The financial books and records will be audited at least once a year.


Article V
Statement of Compliance

The organization will comply with all SA&LP and University policies, procedures, and practices and all local, state, and federal laws.

Section A. Registration/Reactivation
The President Elect will be responsible to complete and follow-through on the requirements for the registration process as set forth by SA&LP.


Article VI
Meetings

Section A. Frequency of Meetings
Meetings are held monthly at the discretion of the executive board.

Section B. Special Meetings
Special meetings may be needed for organization of activities, speakers, and events. Members will be notified via email.

Section C. Quorum
Business will be conducted by the members in attendance at meetings or by the executive board, and will follow the majority rule.


Article VII
Advisors

The advisor will be selected on the basis of interest in the chapter and will be in office continuously until the chapter or the advisor sees it fit to discontinue the relationship.


Article VIII
Amendments

Section A. Constitution
Any member may propose an amendment that will be voted on by the entire chapter membership. An amendment may be passed if 75% of the membership present votes it so.


Article IX
Bylaws

Bylaws may be developed as needed for the MTNA chapter.
