Ted Nugent to speak at Western Michigan University

Ted Nugent is speaking at Western Michigan University on Monday, March 31 at WMU’s Miller auditorium.

“We are excited and honored to host Ted Nugent,” says Megan Buwalda, Chairman of the WMU College Republicans. “Mr. Nugent is cultural icon. Gun rights have been a very hot topic on campus recently and we feel that Ted Nugent will contribute positively to the discourse in our community,” she added.

Ted Nugent is an American hard rock guitarist and vocalist from Detroit, Michigan. He originally gained fame as the front man of the Amboy Dukes. He is noted for his conservative political views and his vocal pro-hunting and Second Amendment activism.

Nugent’s speech is titled “God, Guns & Rock n Roll.” The event is free and open to both students and the general public. Following the speech, there will be a question and answer session.

“We expect to welcome a large turnout to Mr. Nugent’s speech,” says Buwalda. “We hope the speech exposes students and the community to a new viewpoint and encourages civil discussion and debate. We look forward to a great event.”

The College Republicans have hosted many successful speaking events in the past years. Speakers include Pat Buchanan, Dinesh D'Souza, Congressman and presidential candidate Tom Tancredo, Michelle Malkin, Justice Ray Moore, Ann Coulter, Attorney General John Ashcroft, and most recently 20/20 host John Stossel. These events have been attended by many thousands of Western students and are always open and both students and the community free of charge. The College Republicans meet weekly, Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. in the Brown and Gold room of the Bernhard Center.

WMUGOP Voted Best Chapter In Nation

The College Republicans at Western Michigan University were awarded the “Best Chapter” award for 2006 by the College Republican National Committee. The award was presented in Lansing on Saturday to WMUGOP Chairman Tom Barrett.

WMU’s College Republicans have been active for many years on campus hosting speakers such as Pat Buchanan and Ann Coulter, as well as influencing elections in the local community through volunteer activism. Thousands of hours were logged by College Republicans from WMU in the last election calling voters, knocking on doors, placing yard signs, and other work on various campaign activities. Many members worked on campaigns as staff members, while two members ran for office themselves. Several College Republicans ran for precinct delegate positions and five have been selected to serve on the executive committee of the Kalamazoo County Republican Party.

“I was honored to accept such a high award on behalf of the Western Michigan University College Republicans,” said Chairman Tom Barrett. “We have put in countless hours of work on campaigns, hosting speakers, and spreading our message on campus. It is so rewarding to see this work pay off with being chosen as the best chapter in the entire country,” he added. Public Relations Vice Chairman Megan Buwalda said, “I always knew that our group was strong, but it was such a wonderful surprise to be chosen for this award.”

To be chosen groups must demonstrate activism on campus as well as involvement in electoral politics.
