Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America
(E.L.C.A.)
The E.L.C.A. is the largest Lutheran Church in North America. By "evangelical" we mean that "preaching the gospel" (which is what that word means) is central to our identity as a people of God. We believe that, as it says in the fifth chapter of the book of Romans, "we are justified by faith" through grace. This means that we believe that salvation is the free gift of God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and therefore there is NOTHING we can do to earn or receive it. We simply believe in Jesus as the one who has the power to bring us new life. We know that Christians are people who are both holy and sinful (simultaneously saints and sinners); because we are always going to mess up, we trust in the forgiveness of sins from a loving and merciful God.
Our church is a welcoming place for all people because we know that all of us are created in God's own image. We also believe that the true church is big enough to embrace people on different sides of various issues: because of this conviction, we work hard to be an hospitable place for members of the LGBT community, those who fight for peace and those who support the military, those who favor liberal agendas and those who are politically conservative, pro-choice and pro-life advocates, those who love that "old-time religion" and those who worship to a beat. We are a community! That means we love one another as Christ has loved us; we struggle together, and rejoice together.
